Auditions for GLORIA: A Life by Emily Mann

REGIONAL PREMIERE - Gloria Steinem first raised her voice five decades ago as the co-founder of Ms. Magazine and with her highly publicized undercover reporting as a Playboy Bunny. How a determined writer, championing equality for all, became the face of the Women’s Movement and the story of her contemporaries is now an inspiring new play that transcends traditional theatre. A Women’s Centennial Event.

Seven Women. One performer plays Gloria. All other roles are played by a multi-generational, diverse ensemble of actors. Trans and non-binary actors willing to present as women are encouraged to audition.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Prepare a 1-2 minute contemporary monologue of your choosing, or select one of the following sides from the play.
  • Submit a video of your audition monologue via the audition form.

PRODUCTION DETAILS

REHEARSALS
Initial source work to begin in August based on company members’ schedules. Rehearsals will begin in earnest in September after Labor Day - Tuesday, September 8. We will meet 3-4 times per week. Due to the ever-changing nature of Covid-19, rehearsals will begin online. Face to face rehearsals will begin once it is deemed safe to do so with proper safety protocols in place.

General Information for all CenterStage Auditions

COVID ALERT
CenterStage Theatre and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester are committed to the safety of all our audiences, performers, staff and participants. Our cleaning and safety protocols are designed to offer the safest environment possible.

CenterStage productions are scheduled with the understanding that all events are subject to change in both date and format. Gloria, A Life and Something Magical, Disney in Concert are both designed to be able to be rehearsed and/or performed in person or online. Production dates are subject to change with notice. 

AUDITIONS FOR MUSICALS 
Come prepared to sing 32 bars of two prepared songs. Accompanist provided. Please bring sheet music in the correct key. Please select a song appropriate to the style of the production. Please dress prepared for a dance audition as well. No bare feet. The audition will start with a dance audition for all audition candidates. Then, each person, will since their song in the order in which they arrived.

AUDITIONS FOR PLAYS
These will involve reading from the script. It is suggested you have read the script in advance and are familiar with the characters/context. Most scripts available by email upon request.

REHEARSALS 
Typically weekday evenings and Sundays. 3-5 days per week depending on the production. No rehearsals or performances on Fridays. Please bring a list of ALL rehearsal conflicts. We try to work around minimal conflicts if identified at auditions.

Adult performers are paid a production stipend which varies, based on the role/track/etc. Youth performers are not paid. CenterStage casts Rochester-based performers. We do not provide housing. AEA members are considered for select roles. Please inquire in advance.

All auditions are open to all races and genders. Race/gender specific roles will be noted when applicable. JCC membership is not required. Performers receive a free JCC membership during their rehearsal/performance period.

Call backs (if needed) are the day after the open auditions.
