Senior Director, Fitness Wellness and Recreation

The Senior Director, Fitness, Wellness and Recreation provides hands-on leadership for the operations and development for various programs such as wellness, group exercise classes, personal training; aquatics; staff supervision and designs practices, processes, and procedures for strong program and project management. The candidate will be innovative and capable of providing inspirational leadership for the fitness staff.

This position requires a BA/BS degree in exercise science, physical education/related field or its equivalent in related experience with an emphasis on wellness and health enhancement and a minimum 4-5 years professional experience in similar agency or health and fitness establishment. Well defined administration skills and abilities in the areas of personnel management, volunteers, program planning, income production, expense control, training, public relations and record-keeping and facility utilization, maintenance and care are required. The Senior Director is part of a staff team and must possess a leadership style that is team oriented. The position requires continual pursuit of further education in the areas of exercise science, wellness, aquatic, supervision, and members service. This person needs to have a good overall picture of the JCC traditions and values and hold current certifications in CPR, AED, First Aid and O2.

Due to the diversity of responsibility, a high degree of organizational ability is needed. Strong skills are needed in supervision, public speaking, written and verbal communication skills and fund-raising.

Responsibilities:

  • Hire, supervise, mentor and evaluate department managers (Fitness, Group Exercise, Aquatics).
  • Develop your site as a Center of Excellence, with multiple Subject Matter Experts.
  • Foster and manage quality relationships with client and site members.
  • Drive, track and report on key metrics regularly.
  • Complete P/L influence and control.
  • Support managers and membership by responding to emergency program and member requests, staff needs, scheduling and acting as a marketing liaison for all fitness, wellness, aquatic programs and strategies.
  • Ensure excellent customer service and customer responsiveness to both inside and outside constituents.
  • Understand and be committed to the mission and vision of the Center. Be knowledgeable about the Jewish Community Center (JCC), its programs, services, and offerings. Be an advocate for the JCC, its programs and team.
  • Interact with client management on a daily/weekly basis to enhance communications and build a positive client/vendor relationship.
  • Develop department budgets and strategic business plan, and monitor for progress monthly as a part of client monthly operations updates as measured against annual goals for the departments.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years of management experience within the fitness industry, including overseeing Aquatics.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in fitness or business-related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in increasing programming participation in both for-profit and non-profit environments.
  • Scheduling flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support programming.
  • Successful track record managing sales, personal/small group training, operations, group programming and customer service.
  • Excellent communication – both written and oral, leadership, interpersonal and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to anticipate, manage, and solve operational issues on a regular, and daily, basis.
  • Highly skilled in Google Docs, Excel, as well as proven ability to work with different CRM systems.
  • Outgoing personality.
