Social Interest Groups
Adult special interest groups provide a unique opportunity for members to enjoy activities, discussions, workshops and forums that cater to individual and group interests. Develop a special talent or learn more about subjects and places unknown to you. Programs dedicated to creating and maintaining an environment of growth, opportunity and interaction.
The following programs are presented by The Resource Place at the JCC.
Are you a woman who is facing a fork in the road of your life's journey? Do you want to meet other women travelers on this journey? If so, Connections is for you.When retirement or downsizing, a death or divorce, or other lifecycle event jolts us out of our routines, we find the freedom to redefine ourselves. Through a series of group discussions and activities, we will share the hills and valleys of this journey; we will examine our relationships with ourselves and others; and we will support and learn from each other.
You, the participants, determine in large part the directions that this group takes. You will have the opportunity to talk and form new friendships, exchange ideas, listen to speakers, plan activities and trips, etc. Your presence will define the group. You have nothing to lose, and a lot to gain. We hope to meet you—stop in and say "Hello!"
An association of retired men ranging from early 50's and upward. Meets every Tuesday for bagels, coffee and discussion. Special speakers are occasionally scheduled.
Unwind at the JCC Coffee Shop and hear the folk stylings of the trio, The Amy Hazard Band. Grab a drink and listen to this Rochester based band featuring great guitar, stellar bass and fantastic vocals.
Join us to learn some of the best-known strategies to enhance your memory. Lunch provided.
This program will discuss dreams and how we can become more aware of the hidden meanings that may be our subconscious mind creating avenues for problem-solving in our waking hours. You will receive a Dream Diary that will help you to record your dreams and look for themes and patterns. There will not be any individual dream interpretations done.
Have you lost someone special to you recently? Do you feel like you could use some camaraderie with others who may understand some of what you are going through? Then please come join us for an informal, supportive, discussion. Feel free to share something about the special person that you lost, and your experiences with life after the loss, or simply come and listen.
This is an open group, meaning that you may come for any or all of the sessions. Your special person may have been a spouse, a parent, or anyone else who was very close to you.

Interested in current events local, national and international? Come join other interested individuals every Wednesday from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. We cover local town and city issues politics, science and other topics in the news. Topics are suggested by the weekly participants so your interests will be covered as well. Coffee is available. Free, no pre registration required.

This six week class will explore how the practice of being mindful is a way of relating to yourself and the world around you. Through experiential learning, we will see how these practices affect both our inner and outer lives. Inwardly, we become aware of what we are feeling, thinking, and experiencing in the moment, without judgment. Outwardly, we learn to focus our attention in ways that make us more present in what we are doing and in our relating to others. We will explore: slowing down, paying attention to our bodies and our minds, lowering stress and anxiety, being aware of and letting go of our thoughts, delaying emotional responses, not getting stuck in the past or worrying about the future, and cultivating our natural resilience and our positive qualities. Bring a blanket or yoga mat. Class is limited to 15 participants.
